BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is the tragic and moving story of two cowboys who unexpectedly fall in love while working together one summer in 1963. Rodeo cowboy, Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and ranch-hand, Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) are hired to tend sheep together on Brokeback Mountain. Over the course of the summer they become good friends. Their friendship explodes one particularly chilly evening, Jack invites Ennis into his tent where a sudden awkward embrace sends their relationship in a new direction. Though each man stubbornly defends his heterosexuality the next day, sparks between them cannot help but grow. They have no language to describe their feelings but know that something vital has taken place and that their lives will never be the same. The two are separated when their job comes to an end. Jack marries Lureen (Anne Hathaway). Ennis marries Alma (Michelle Williams). After four years, they meet again. When the two men embrace and exchange kisses, both are affected profoundly by the rekindling of their old feelings for each other. Those feelings lead each to consider what continuing their hidden relationship would cost them. Brokeback Mountain was based on the short story by Pulitzer Prize-winning author E.
