Bette [ Jennifer Beals] and Tina [Laurel Holloman] are s lesbian couple who have been together for seven years. They are looking for a sperm donor so they can have a baby.

Their next-door neighbour is Tim (Eric Mabius) a straight, open-minded, good looking guy eagerly awaiting the arrival of his girlfriend, Jenny [Mia Kirshner] a writer fresh out of college to move in with him.

Among their friends are Dana [Erin Daniels] a professional tennis player who's still in the closet. Alice [Leisha Hailey] is a bisexual journalist, Shane [Katherine Moennig] is the free-spirited lesbian who has dated most of the women in Los Angeles while Bette's half-sister Kit [Pam Grier] is a recovering alcoholic.

The central themes of "The L Word" revolve around this close group of friends. Bette and Tina battle "lesbian bed death" while Jenny has her world turned upside down when the exotic and stunning Marina (Karina Lombard) begins to challenge Jenny's lifelong heterosexuality with a torrid affair.
