I found DJ TK on Facebook to ask him to share with us his favorite LGBT movies and more:
Notstraight: What was the first LGTB movie you watched?
DJ TK: Hard to remember. I'm thinking "The Hunger". Not specifically a queer film--it's a vampire story--but sees Catherine Deneuve involved in a steamy affair with Susan Sarandon (and David Bowie, too). That's queer enough for me! For my first "queer film" I'm thinking it was something by Bruce La Bruce. Doesn't get much queerer....
Notstraight: What is your favorite genre for movies? Coming Out / Camp/ Romance/ Suspense/ Action/ Horror
DJ TK: I like them all! I'm crazy for movies! I'm very fond of Hindi Cinema. I've worked on soundtracks for several films, television shows and ads. A lot of the time I'm watching and re-visiting films just for the soundtracks.
Notstraight: What is your favorite LGTB movie?
DJ TK: Deepa Mehta's "Fire"; "Zero Patience"; and Warhol's "Trash". And, I did like "I Love You Phillip Morris". I love films with a camp sensibility, too, so old Bette Davis and Marilyn Monroe flicks, and "Valley of The Dolls" are total favourites of mine.
Notstraight: What is your favorite Hetrosexual movie?
DJ TK: Bladerunner.
Notstraight: Do you like black and white movies? Why or why not?
DJ TK:
Yes. For contemporary films, the use of black and white coaxes other elements of the plot or themes out with the stark contrasts in the visuals. It adds drama and polarizes emotions. I love classic films too, and don't mind them in B&W or colourized.
Although Bette Davis is so much more intense in B&W....
Notstraight: What past Pride event or experience is most memorable for you?
DJ TK: The entire festival! I'm the Arts & Culture Manager for Pride Toronto, so I feel that the entire body of programming has something valuable to offer folks. Of course, a highlight for me this year, for sure, was seeing the success of Blockorama.
Notstraight: Which is your favorite time of the day, are you a morning person or a night person?
DJ TK: Night. Beautiful night.
Notstraight: What's your favorite song of the moment?
DJ TK: Tough one...I've been revisiting David Bowie's discography at the moment, and have been listening to "Alladin Sane" quite a bit. Also, The Beastie Boys latest, "Hot Sauce Committee Part Two", has a real classic Beasties feel that I'm loving. I listen to a lot of mix shows and follow a lot of music blogs. Impossible to pick just one favourite!!
Notstraight: What's your favorite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
DJ TK: I often watch the "Bollywood Freetime" film on television on Sundays. I enjoy relaxing at a beach party. I like wandering around in Kensington Market. I love to be invited for brunch!
Notstraight: Are you a cat or a dog lover?
DJ TK: Yes
Notstraight: Do you have a pet/s?
DJ TK: Not at the moment, but I've had both dogs and cats.
Notstraight: Do you like to sing in the shower?
DJ TK: Sure
Notstraight: What was your first tattoo or piercing and where is it? What does it stand for?
DJ TK: Piercing that you can't see! I got it as a means of becoming more connected to my body.
Notstraight: What was the first film/play you acted in?
DJ TK: Other than grade school...it was a high school production of Camelot.
Notstraight: Do you like to sing karaoke?
DJ TK: Yes. Not that I'm any good!!
Notstraight: Would you rather have the power to be invisible or the power to read minds?
DJ TK: Read minds.
Notstraight: Do you have some coming out words of wisdom?
DJ TK: Just be true to yourself. Come out on your own terms, at your own pace. Don't let anyone pressure you into coming out sooner than you need to. If you need to wait to tell your parents, then wait. If you need to wait to come out to everyone at work/school/whatever then take your time. Take time for self-care. And when it's time for you to come out, when you're ready, take a deep breath and do not hesitate. You are strong and free.
Notstraight: Thanks TK for taking the time to answer these quick questions.
